Mission and History of Deana's Educational Theater
Deana's Educational Theater (DET) acts to prevent relationship violence. We are recognized as an innovative leader in developing and producing comprehensive educational theater programs on relationship violence for grades K-12, colleges, the military, and communities around the United States and abroad.
In response to a personal tragedy, the family and friends of of Deana Brisbois, who was a victim of dating violence, founded Deana's Educational Theater. In 1995 DET launched a breakthrough dating violence prevention original play* The Yellow Dress. Remote Control, our interactive dating violence prevention play soon followed -- providing a strong model for males to stand up against violence while focusing on the early warning signs of abuse.
Recognizing that violence is a learned behavior, and that efforts in reaching out to younger children is crucial, Deana's Educational Theater has produced two plays, Doin' the Right Thing! and All Starz, for elementary school audiences. The plays focus on the issues of bullying and harassment and help empower bystanders. Deana's Educational Theater also offers student, professional, and community trainings on violence-related issues.
Deana's Educational Theater was highlighted in the Catalogue of Philanthropy, Massachusetts 1999 and again chosen as one of eight venture Philanthropy projects in 2000. DET's highly-regarded programs have been featured on Good Morning America, The Associated Press, Educational Leadership, The Osgood File and many other national, regional and local media outlets.
